Hotels & Guest in Birganj
Birganj is the busy border town which serves as the main entry point to Nepal for travelers from India. It is a rapidly growing industrial town connected to Bihar's Raxaul. If you are traveling from Calcutta and Patna to Kathmandu, you have to pass through Birganj. For almost all the travelers, however, it is just a stopping point for over night on the way to Kathmandu or Chitwan National Park.
Birganj and Raxaul Bazaar on the Indian side of the border are basically connected. The bus stations in the two towns are about a 30 minutes rickshaw ride apart. The Birganj bus station is 500m east of the clock tower on Ring Road. Nepalese immigration is open 24 hours (maybe 6 am to 7 pm), but after 7 pm you may have to find the immigration officer. When entering Nepal it is best to have the exact amount in US dollars, or you may have to wait hours for change. Most businesses in Birganj accept Indian rupees at the official rate.
Foreigners can cross the border here into India. As this place is a dirty, polluted, industrial city, you most likely will want to leave this town as soon as you get to it. If you are coming from Calcutta or Patna, Birganj is the best place to enter Nepal, otherwise there is no reason to come here. If you are coming to Nepal from Delhi or Varanasi, it is best to enter at Sunauli.
Access: There are plenty of bus services arriving at Birganj from Kathmandu, Chitwan, Pokhara, Gorkha, Nepalganj, Janakpur, Biratnagar, Kakadbhitta, Dharan, Pashupatinagar and many other motorable destinations.
